Golden Star Burgers
7123 Yonge St
Golden Star Burgers is a nice little joint located north of Steeles on Yonge St. A little bit out of the way if you don’t have a car. I’ve heard a lot of hype about this place, and friends I was with kept raving about it. This restaurant has been in business since 1964, and it doesn’t look like much has changed over the years. The decor is similar to that of an old diner and more like something you’d see closer to cottage country than in Toronto. That being said, there is plenty of seating both indoors and on the patio. It is important to note this place is cash only. An ATM is available on site. The staff were very friendly, the place was clean, and the big screen TV had the hockey game on. They also serve beer. The regular burger here is comprised of four ounces of fresh beef. The beef is ground on site, and they have their own homemade BBQ sauce and honey mustard. A very nice touch. Standard toppings are available, along with caramelized onions. I had mine with everything, of course. The total for a combo, which includes fries and a small fountain coke came to $10.15. Very competitive if you ask me. Your order is served in a basket, which gives it a nice old school feel. The ambiance of Golden Star is part of it’s charm.
Conclusion: With all the hype surrounding Golden Star, I must say I was slightly disappointed. The patty, although seasoned nicely, was very thin and somewhat reminiscent of processed burgers. It also had somewhat of a “slimey” texture. I’m not saying it tasted bad, it didn’t… but I didn’t get the impression that it was a homemade burger. It wasn’t thick and juicy like I’ve read in other reviews of this restaurant… messy, yes, but that was more from the condiments I selected. Maybe their 6oz All-Star burger is better. There’s also the location. A little north of the city, and if you’re travelling by transit, it’s quite a pain in the butt to get to. Even though I was disappointed in the burger, I would be willing to give Golden Star another shot. Like I said earlier, the ambiance can’t be beat. Check out their website at www.goldenstarburgers.com
