I’ve been hearing a lot about this place called “The Works,” so I thought I should check it out. There’s multiple locations across the city. The one I went to was Bloor West Village, located at 2245 Bloor St W.
Now, this is not your ordinary take out burger joint. This is a dine in restaurant with ample, comfortable seating. Fully licensed as well if you like to have a beer with your burger. You even have a choice on what type of patty you desire, which are 100% Fresh Canadian Beef, Cheese Stuffed Beef Patty, Fresh Chicken Breast, Ground Turkey, Gourmet Veggie, Portobello Mushroom Cap, Lean Domestic Elk. I’m not sure about the others, but the beef is 8oz and cooked medium well.
There are many different types of burgers here, including The “Babewatch,” with Avocado slices & Monterey jack, The “Dead Ringer,” with Smoked brisket, smokey BBQ sauce, jack cheese & an onion ring, and the “Down Under,” with Caramelized onions, egg, pineapple, purple beets & Gouda. There so many burgers to choose from here, it can be a little overwhelming. Again, based on my criteria, I went for the most basic burger on the menu, which was the “Ho Hum.” it comes with Cheddar cheese. According to their website, “extremely boring – if your date orders this, run!!” I added the usual lettuce, tomatoes , onions, ketchup, mustard, relish.
I got there around 5:30pm during a snow storm and there was a few people there including a family with 2 young children. I can imagine it can be very busy on a nice day during peak hours. The server insisted I should dine in to get the full experience, but I opted to take my burger to go. So, the Ho Hum, which is their most basic burger with fries, came to $13.47 total. Almost 15 bucks for a burger and fries with no soda! I felt this was a little bit on the over priced side, until I actually tasted the burger and also realized, the price is very competitive to any sit down restaurant out there.
Now, the burger itself was absolutely delicious! The meat was thick, tender, juicy, and extremely flavorful. The bun tasted fresh, and even the fries were outstanding! I was in pure foodgasm until I got about 3/4 through my burger. That’s when I discovered a hair, and it wasn’t mine. Yup, a long, blond hair somehow found a home in my burger. I “almost” lost my appetite right there. I recommend The Works steps up their hygiene practices.
Conclusion: I’m a little torn here, but I’ve decided to base my rating on my experience before the hair incident. Like I said, this was a truly fantastic burger! If you don’t mind spending $20-$30 on a burger dinner, then you should definitely check out The Works. You can view the full menu on their website http://www.worksburger.com. I think this would be a great place to go with some friends, or even on a date. Check it out and tell me what YOU think!
